5 Questions to Ask Before Starting Your Salesforce Lightning Journey

No matter the size of your organization, or the level of Lightning capability you are looking to embed, it is important to think about your strategy from two main perspectives: technology and change. The two components go hand-in-hand to ensure your project is ultimately a success.

At Rightpoint, our clients benefit from building a holistic approach (that includes technology and change) to their Lightning strategy. At the onset of any project we like to work with our clients to further develop their change enablement plan to ultimately drive adoption and project success. Below are some key questions we plan for, and would ask you to consider, as you assess your organizational readiness and begin to plan your Lightning journey.

1) How clear is your vision of the future? At the start of any project it is important to have a clear vision that is understood at all levels of the organization. From project sponsors, to executives, to front line employees, everyone needs to be on board about why the project is important to begin with. This vision will also play a critical role in partnering with stakeholders, getting leadership onboard, and working with your impacted teams (often in sales, marketing and executive support).

2) Who are your key stakeholders? At Rightpoint we always recommend that our clients spend time to map out who their stakeholders are in the project and why they are important. In working with Lightning, this strategy is no different. While changes to the broader organization may be smaller compared to other projects, you will want to understand how teams are impacted by the new Lightning features. That way you can plan to address those support needs through communications, training and your change enablement plan.

3) Do you know what tools and resources are needed to support your Lightning teams? It is critical to understand what tools and resources exist in your organization that can support the Lightning updates and changes. Traditionally, training and communications would really help in this area. While we would still recommend those strategies, you should also consider things like: recognition, updating related systems, changing how meetings happen, create more visibility on reports, including the Lightning launch in bonus/performance plans and updating job descriptions to include the new business processes and job responsibilities.

4) What are your measures of success? Out of your vision, the team should create a way to measure success over time. This strategy can also drive behavior to use various features within the Lightning experience. By having everyone on the same page about what success looks like you can create a culture of viewing, discussing and making adjustments, based on data. Success measures will also drive your plan to make future enhancements and updates.

5) What is your plan for integration? So far we have addressed specific strategies and considerations for your project. Other tactics that we look at with Lightning include: organizational alignment, risk mitigation planning, collaboration tactics and leadership support. We recommending taking each of these components and building out a specific plan for launch that your project team and key stakeholders can get behind. By building everything into a plan, you can work to tackle each strategy with purpose.

While these questions are not inclusive of every item you should be focused on for your Lightening journey, they can certainly lead you in the right direction. It is important to understand that while Lightning can work to fit your needs, at the end of the experience is a person. It is critical to think through your organizational culture, the people you are impacting and how to support each stakeholder through the transition.
